Sun-young Moon

b. 1979

Sun-young Moon is a pioneering contemporary artist who has redefined the visual language of Minhwa (traditional Korean folk painting) through a modern, sophisticated lens. Her practice bridges heritage and innovation, earning her top honors at prestigious national competitions, including the Grand Prize at the Korea Minhwa Exhibition. Deeply rooted in the exploration of symbolic forms, Moon’s work is characterized by a disciplined commitment to expanding the boundaries of Korean aesthetics while maintaining a profound connection to their historical essence.

Her artistic influence resonates globally, with acclaimed exhibitions at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Málaga City Hall, and Princeton University. Moon’s ability to harmonize traditional motifs with contemporary sensibilities is further showcased through high-profile collaborations with luxury brands such as GUCCI and Nespresso. Her works are held in permanent collections at the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum and major international institutions, solidifying her standing as a leading figure in the global art canon. Currently, she serves as the Vice President of the Korea Minhwa Promotion Association and Director of Mungok Academy.

In her 2026 solo exhibition, Between, at OMAE Gallery, Moon unveiled a significant conceptual evolution centered on the medium of thread. In an almost meditative and labor-intensive process, she painstakingly adheres each thread, one by one, to create intricate textural narratives that visualize the “layers of destiny” and human connection. Moving beyond traditional iconography, this new body of work—including celebrated series like Pillow End, Dancing Peonies, and Harmony—represents a profound artistic flight, inviting viewers into a silent, tactile dialogue with the essence of existence.
